年末の京都といえば南座の歌舞伎の祭典「吉例顔見世興行」。出演俳優の名前を大きく書いた看板が南座正面に飾られる“まねき上げ”は京の冬の風物詩だ。今年は三部制。歌舞伎の魅力を盛り込んだ演目が並ぶ中、第三部に近松門左衛門作『女殺油地獄(おんなごろしあぶらのじごく)』が「顔見世」に初登場する。主役の河内屋与兵衛を演じるのは片岡愛之助。「顔見世で、上方の役者で『油地獄』ができるのは本当に幸せ」と語る愛之助は、第二部『封印切』でも「大好きな役」の丹波屋八右衛門 全文
